A councillor in Yorkshire has written to his local golf clubs asking them to plant more trees in a bid to boost woodland.

Matthew Robinson, from Harewood Parish Council in Leeds, wrote to every golf club across his ward, along with farmers and landowners, to ask if they have land for planting. It follows a successful appeal for more tree planting in the area last year.

Leeds City Council is part of the White Rose Forest Partnership, which supports those – including golf clubs – looking to plant trees in the region.

Robinson said: “Trees are a vital part of our natural landscape, providing shelter for wildlife and stock, reducing surface water run off, creating stronger and more attractive boundaries, as well as a secure source of woodfuel.

“I hope a number of people will take part in the initiative.”
