Henbury Golf Club completes bunker renovation

Situated in magnificent parkland setting of mature woodland, bordering the Blaise Castle Estate in Bristol, Henbury GC recently completed a second stage of work with bunker construction specialist Durabunker. Having worked with the club pre-pandemic to introduce ‘The Fully Sealed Bunker System’ through a combination of Durabunker’s synthetic bunker edging and rubber crumb liner, the company was commissioned to re-model the signature par three on the golf course.

Gary Hawley, course manager, commented: “We were confident that the products worked, having analysed them since 2019. The maintenance savings and performance have been clear to all. It was though very helpful and a slight relief, to have Durabunker take responsibility for the entire project.”

Greens committee chairman Kevin Stokes commented: “We wanted to give Durabunker a little more freedom through this next phase of works and use it as a design template moving forward. We met with Durabunker owner Rhydian Lewis to discuss design and execution and were really pleased with the ideas and concept drawings he produced.”

Durabunker was ultimately given a ‘design and build’ remit by the club.

Rhydian Lewis, owner at Durabunker, commented: “We have developed a great team of people with decades of experience in the golf course construction industry. Many of our clients choose to take projects in-house and install our products themselves, which has proven a very successful delivery model, however our contracting capabilities coupled with our significant experience working with world class architects, such as Nicklaus Design, Robert Trent Jones Jnr and Dye Design, have helped position us to offer turnkey solutions to golf clubs. It was particularly satisfying to bring all of our capabilities to the fore at Henbury, completing the project with our own products, our own team and our own design.”

Kevin concluded: “My expectations of the project were very high, but Durabunker have far exceeded them. The bunkers and the hole looks simply stunning. What a transformation!”
