A reader has emailed GreenKeeping to ask what can be done about badger damage to golf courses.

The anonymous golf industry professional wrote: ‘It might be worthwhile having a look at the damage badgers are causing on various golf courses.

‘I attach a photograph I took of a golf hole from a leading golf club in January where great swathes of the fairway have been ripped up.

‘There is also damage on two other holes. But what can we do?

‘Apparently the pesticide used to kill the chafer grubs the badgers feast on, and which live beneath the grass surface on the fairways, has been banned. I know that other clubs have experienced problems but what is the solution?’

On social media, one club professional wrote in response: ‘Get the badgers professionally moved and fence around the course boundary. Just like Thetford Golf Club did years back. They very cleverly put gates into the fence and put the latch out of reach of your average badger. Problem solved.”

Another wrote: ‘Apply for emergency authorisation for the insecticide Acelepryn.’ However, Allan Tait, golf course manager at Sweetwoods Park Golf Club, replied: ‘Permission will not be granted for fairway applications. So I’ve been told.’
