The Dyke completes bunker renovation

The Dyke Golf Club in Brighton recently completed the renovation of a multi-phase bunker renovation project using bunker specialist Durabunker. All greenside bunkers were completed over three phases, starting in autumn 2021 and completing in November 2022.

Course manager Rob Hudson said: “Our bunkers suffered with contamination from stoney subsoils, as well as regular washout, and sand blow was another major issue for us, due to our location high on the South Downs. We presented Durabunker with quite a challenge, but one they were more than up to.”

Thirty-three bunkers were completed in total, all being re-modelled by Durabunker, which was commissioned to undertake the entire project from concept to completion.

Rob continued: “The team at Durabunker were fantastic throughout the project. Their professionalism and quality of work were exemplary and they were also just great guys to have on site. As a course manager, whenever contractors come in, you want to feel comfortable and confident in their work; we certainly felt that with Durabunker.”

The club chose to go with Durabunker’s rubber crumb liner, DuraCrumb, coupled with its patent granted synthetic bunker edging solution.

Rhydian Lewis, owner at Durabunker, added: “Some clients prefer to focus on self-install of our products, driven in the main by their budget, but there is an increasing number that are commissioning us to execute the entirety or the vast majority of the project.

“We are very proud of the results we’ve achieved by combining quality and appropriate products, with high quality construction and installation. Combining a seamless liner with a synthetic bunker edge is about as good as it gets in terms of maintenance and ensuring consistently playable bunkers, though the sand choice is crucial as well. At The Dyke, there is a lot of wind blow, so choosing a stable, semi-angular sand was crucial to achieving successful outcomes.”

The results have been outstanding according to Rob: “We couldn’t be happier. The bunkers have stood up to extreme rainfall, and pretty much everything nature could throw at them. They also look stunning and have transformed the look and feel of the green complexes,” he said.
